Indigenous men, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, August 1918

1918

“Port. E. African natives. Note old gent on extreme right scratching himself.” Crowd scene showing a large group of indigenous men. They are probably part of a local community encountered by the military column, to which Cap.t Irvine was attached, as they made the return journey north. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
