German Grave, Zambezia province, Mozambique, 23-29 July 1918

1918

“The end of a German officer.” Exterior view of a clearing with a grave marker and fronds covering a grave. The officer was probably captured during the skirmish at Namirrue on 22 July 1918 when the Fitzgerald column, to which Capt. Irvine was attached, encountered von Lettow’s forces. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
