Soldiers of the column, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, August 1918

1918

“Askaris on the march.” Landscape view showing a military column marching up hill. The askaris are probably soldiers of the 4/4 King’s African Rifles or the Nigerian Brigade with men of the Carrier Corps coming up behind. The column is making the return journey north towards Port Amelia. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
