Prisoners at window, Lumbo, Mozambique, 1918

1918

“… We went to the castle & saw these poor miserable prisoners…” Portrait of three indigenous men looking through a barred window. Lt. Irvine was on board the S.S. Salamis which was transporting troops to Portuguese East Africa and had stopped over at Lumbo. ❧ The image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During this time he would meet Dr John W Arthur which in turn would lead to his missionary work at Chogoria in Kenya.
