Walking point, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, August 1918

1918

“The ‘point’ – leading man of an advance. He usually got ‘’blotted’ if the Germans put up an ambush, as they did on average, once or twice a day.” Portrait of a soldier walking point, through the bush, and followed by several other men. They are probably from the 4/4 King’s African Rifles and are with a column returning north. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
