Captured porter, Ancuabe, Mozambique, March-April 1918

1918

“A German porter captured and tied to a tree.” Portrait of an indigenous man standing tied to a tree. He was being held at the British military camp and carrier hospital at Ancuabe. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
