Clearing site for hospital, Ancuabe, Mozambique, March 1918

1918

“I was given my site [for a carrier hospital]. This was part of it. I got my boys to clean it of brush. Note the bamboo.” Landscape view showing men using machetes to clear thick undergrowth, Capt. Irvine stands on the right supervising. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
