Column crossing a stream, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, April-July 1918

1918

“Here we are crossing a river, note flat boxes of ammunition. My boys were all ammunition porters.” Exterior view showing an army column crossing a small bridge and continuing on into woodland. Capt. Irvine was attached to a column of the 4/4 KAR and Nigerian Brigade as a medical officer, particularly treating the men of the Carrier Corps. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
