Clearing land, Ancuabe, Mozambique, March-April 1918

1918

“Clearing land to build a hospital.” Portrait of an indigenous man in military uniform hacking down a tree. The area is being cleared for the Carrier Clearing Hospital at Ancuabe, about sixty miles from the coast, where Capt. Irvine was posted. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
