Missionary Klautzsch teaching, Rungwe, Tanzania, ca. 1903-1906

"Rungwe. Br. Klautzsch gibt Schulunterricht." ("Rungwe. Br[other] Klautzsch teaches at school."). Missionary Klautzsch sitting on a stool surrounded by African children holding slates in their hands. Two older boys are standing on either side, one holding an abacus and the other one a painting depicting Christ. The group is placed in front of a thatched school hut made from straw with a poster of the alphabet and numbers hung up on the outside wall of the house. A globe is standing in front of Klautzsch in the grass. In the background on the left, a tower of a church bell can be seen. Imprinted on the image: "1755.". 1 photo included from the box of duplicates. -- Gottlieb Ludwig Eduard Klautzsch (1872-1927) was a teacher and a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. He served in Ipyana in 1902 and was head of the apprentices school in Rungwe from 1903 to 1906 after he had married Emma Lange (1873-unknown). In 1906 they returned to Germany due to his health problems.
