Lion proof hut, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, April-July 1918

1918

“At Msalu we had two askaris [soldiers] taken by lions at night from the edge of the camp. In the country area the natives had erected lion proof huts like this.” Exterior view of a hut built on very long stilts. In May two soldiers of the 4/4 King’s African Rifles were attacked by lions at Msalu which damaged moral. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
