Female church elder, Clarkson, South Africa, 1930

1930

"Wittekleibosch. Meta, eine Ältestin der Gemeine." ("Wittekleibosch. Meta, a female church elder."). The picture shows the upper part of a woman of African origin with a white scarf around her head. She wears a white shirt and a dark colored cloth around her shoulders. She sits or stands in front of a house wall. Above her part of a window. Written on the card board: "Br. Baudert 1930." ("Br[other] Baudert 1930."). Wittekleibosch is an outstation of Clarkson. -- The picture was probably taken by Samuel Baudert (1879-1956), born as son of the missionary Samuel Baudert in South Africa. He was the mission director of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine from 1924 to 1927 and since 1929 their bishop. It might also be possible that the picture was taken by Eugen Theodor Baudert (1876-1953) who worked as a lecturer at the theological seminar in Mvenyane.
