School in Steensberg, South Africa

"Schule in Steensberg." ("School in Steensberg."). On this side of the school the year 1937 is painted on the wall, which means that the school was established that year. Further down the words "Christian David School & Moravian Church" are written and surrounded by brick stones. These bricks are also used everywhere on the lower part of the building. On the right is an inscription in Afrikaans on lighter stones. What is written cannot completely be made out in the photograph as it was taken from further away, but it says something about "BISKOP R. MARX" ("Bishop R. Marx") and "OP 13 FEBRUARIE 1937" ("On February 13th 1937"). In the foreground between the school and the fence that surrounds it six children. The four boys on the right are wearing suits with short pants. One smaller boy in short pants, a dark pullover and a white shirt is standing a little apart from them on the left. Further on the left a girl in a white dress and a white hat. She is wearing white socks and dark shoes. Richard Johannes Marx (born 1866 in Berea and died 1958, possibly in Philippi) worked as a missionary in (among others) Moravian Hill, Elim, Mamre, and Lansdowne/Cape Town.
