Interior of the church in Maitland, Cape Town, South Africa, 1930

1930

"Inneres der Kirche in Maitland. Br. Hettasch u. Rassmus" ("Interior of the church in Maitland. Br[other] Hettasch a[nd] Rassmus [=Rasmus]."). The picture shows the right side of the interior of the church which is divided by a wooden wall. In the center two rows of wooden benches. Two men sit on a bench in the center of the picture. One is of European, the other of African origin. Three or four candelabras hang from the ceiling. A clock hangs at the gallery. In the background a gallery with three windows. Stairs leading up to it on the left. Under the gallery two entrance doors for each side of the church interior. Windows on the left and right side of the church building. Written on the card board: "Br. Baudert 1930." ("Br[other] Baudert 1930."). Cf. photo no. 9644 and 9680. -- Photo no. 9644 shows the church from the outside. Photo no. 9680 shows the interior of the church from another perspective. -- Otto Gerhard Hettasch was born in 1871 in Clarkson, South Africa. He was of European origin and worked as a missionary in West Himalaya from 1900 to 1911 and then in South Africa West from 1920 to 1964. Hettasch was a teacher at the teachers training school in Genadendal and later worked in Moravian Hill and Elim. He died in 1964 in Belleville, South Africa. Richard David Rasmus was born in 1869. He was of African origin and worked as a missionary in South Africa West. -- The picture was probably taken by Samuel Baudert (1879-1956), born as son of the missionary Samuel Baudert in South Africa. He was the mission director of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine from 1924 to 1927 and since 1929 their bishop. It might also be possible that the picture was taken by Eugen Theodor Baudert (1876-1953) who worked as a lecturer at the theological seminar in Mvenyane.
