Missionary Kretschmer and his family, Rutenganio, Tanzania, ca. 1892-1916

"Geschw. Kretschmer in Rutenganyo." ("Brethren Kretschmer in Rutenganio."). In the foreground Missionary Kretschmer and his family: his wife, seated on a stool, is sitting in the middle with a baby in her arms, two boys are sitting on stools next to her on either side. Two African girls are sitting on the ground in front of them with two younger children on their laps. Missionary Kretschmer is standing behind his wife. In the background in the center is one big tree backed by several smaller ones and fences surrounding the place. Imprinted on the image: "Missionars-Familie. D. O. A. No. 1333a" ("Missionary family. G[erman]. E[ast]. A[frica]. no. 1333a"). Photo included from the box of duplicates. -- The photo was probably taken during Missionary Kretschmer's stay in Nyasa from 1892 to 1916. -- Johannes Kretschmer (1867-unknown) was a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. He served in Rungwe from November 1892 to 1894, in Rutenganio from 1894 to 1902 and from 1904 to May 1916. In 1894 he married Anna, née Wicke.
