Genera mammalium. Macropodidæ. 1. Setonyx brachyurus. 2. Dendrolagus inustus. 3. Dorcopsis luctuosa. You may not have heard of the Grizzled Tree Kangaroo, but thats to be expected. The Grizzled Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus inustus) is native only to the island of New Guinea and the nearby Indonesian islands. Their population has always been small with a confined habitat even before deforestation threatened the area in which they live. Hidden away from much of the world, little is known about these creatures, but through studying them, more has been found out. Like its cousin, the common, terrestrial kangaroo, the Grizzled Tree Kangaroo has a distinctive flat muzzle. It also shares the same claw shape, but primarily arboreal animals, the Grizzled Tree Kangaroos claws are specially developed for clutching tree branches. Its tail is also adapted for climbing trees, helping it to balance when jumping in the forest canopy. In the kangaroo family, Macropodidae, which means "large foot," tree kangaroos are average sized in comparison to other kangaroos. They stand about three feet high with wallabies, the smallest macropods, a little shorter than them and kangaroos twice their height at six feet! Image shows the Grizzled Tree Kangaroo and its natural stance in a tree. Also, the image shows sketches of the Grizzled Tree Kangaroo's fore and back paws, teeth, and skulls.
