“After a bit the 3/3rd were disbanded and I was posted to M.O. ship for a fortnight, however I was free, and one day, paying a visit to my great friend, Mr Butcher’s house, I found him very ill with malaria & pushed him into hospital for a week. I did his work as far as I could in which wasn’t very far. Above is the church, also used as a school, where most of the work was done, and below, Mr –or rather Capt. Butcher’s house near the carrier camp, Dar es Salaam, und[er] the shadow of the coconuts & mango[s].” Interior view of a thatched building with benches. Capt. H J Butcher worked with the Church Mission Society (CMS) in Dar es Salaam. ❧ The image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During this time he would meet Dr John W Arthur which in turn would lead to his missionary work at Chogoria in Kenya.
