Environs of Cairo from Egypt: Handbook for Travellers.

1902

Egypt: Handbook for Travellers. Environs of Cairo. If you were an adventuresome European with time and money at the turn of the 20th century, you might have used a popular travel book containing this map to explore Cairo, Egypt. Like many maps today, this is both a political and topographic map. It shows roads, landmarks, and urban districts, as well as geographic features, like the Nile River and the highlands to the east of the city. Many of the major roads and landmarks are still in existence, like the Cairo Citadel. It is located on Mokattam Hill, just left of center of the map. It was built as a royal home and as a military barracks for the ruler Saladin, but by the time it was finished in 1182, Saladin was no longer the ruler of Egypt. Today, the Citadel is a well-preserved historical site and a major tourist attraction that is over 800 years old! Double page map of Cairo from Egypt; Handbook for Travelers, edited by Karl Baedeker.
