Saint-Louis, Senegal

1989

These views of Saint-Louis were taken on the 24th and 25th of April, 1989, the day when the border conflict between Senegal and Mauritania erupted. That evening reprisals against Mauritanian residents [many of them silversmiths] started and military trucks poured into the city to evacuate the Mauritanians. A curfew was enforced on the 27th of April. Tourists and visitors were evacuated away from Senegal.
