South African aviator attempting record flight from Cape Town to England ._x000D_ Mr Victor C Smith , a 19 year old South African son of a boot manufacturer , is on his way to Croydon , in an attempt to break the record for a flight from Cape Town to Croydon at present held by Captain C D Barnard , who flew the distance in 11 days accompanied by the Duchess of Bedford .
