Cuffed skirt part of Xhosa costume

The clothes were still commonly worn by Xhosa women in the 1860s. The clothes were called 'rooie komberse' (= blankets). People who wore these clothes were called 'bomvana' which means: 'people who wear red blankets'. This is why the Nguni area is also called 'bomvana land' (info giver).‖ The clothes were bought white and then dyed with ochre and red clay. Then the cover skirt was decorated with embroidery of black fabric and buttons.
