Ghana musical instruments: Akan hourglass drum (Dono)

1966

Notes provided by Rycroft on tape box (these notes are copied word for word): Akan 'hourglass' drum 'Dono', held under left armpit and squeezed to raise the pitch (pressure on thongs increases head tension). Struck with curved stick. Used in dance ensembles and also for message transmission (demonstration on tape). This recording includes an interview between the drummer and Rycroft, in which the drummer explains some of the 'drum language' which he uses.
