18 Jun 2019

Kosha Zionist Christian Church. Singing and Dancing organised by Kadimo Kokoro. Songs: 'Pela tulo go Morena' (B. Lebang).- 'Sefapaano ke a boha' (B. Lebang).- 'Matlhomoleng a ka Jesu ona le nna' (B. Lebang).- 'Motswalle olelang' (B. Lebang).- 'Jesu o tseba se re se tlhokang' (B. Lebang and Alice).- 'Oa lebona lesedi' (B.Lebang).- 'Joko ya gago' (S.Samuel) and a very short fragment. According to Brearley's notes: Nata village in north-eastern Botswana is where several different cultures and languages have met and influenced one another during the last century or more. These include the Bakalanga, the Batswana and the Basarwa (Bushmen). Of this last group, some are related to the River Bushmen of the northern waterways of Botswana, and other are the descendents of Bushmen from other districts brought to Nata by Batswana cattle-owners as herdsmen and serfs. Intermarriage with the Batswana and Bakalanga has brought about a darkening of the skin, but the two main groups, the Kwa-dam and the Chira-dam, have their own languages and cultures. The musical styles of the various groups overlap to the extent that one finds a Motswana learning to play a Bushman instrument, a Bushman learning a Tswana instrument, Kalanga dances performed by Bushmen (and viceversa), and many other variations.
