The Lens of Liberation

2024

In this edition of the GALA Times, we pay tribute to photography as a vital instru- ment for enriching and shaping LGBTQIA+ history. [...] Once in a while, you will be a version of yourself that you don’t like, and that will just mean it’s time to re-evaluate. [...] To young Kgomotso OMG, I can’t believe you were so cute! I want to wrap you in the biggest, warmest hug and tell you that they lied—you’re cute AF! Being left by the woman who birthed you is incredibly hard, but this will lead to a life with Mme, who will be the biggest love of your life. [...] stand in front of the Munch Museum and a portrait from Somnyama Ngonyama, Oslo 2022. [...] Your sense of pride is not connected to what you do for work, or who you’re sleeping with, or what you’re wearing and all that. [...] Ever since I came to Johannesburg, I’ve re- alised that I’m not the only one, and I’ve seen that there are a lot of people like me. [...] Queer representation has been my area of interest for years now, and I’ve come to understand that it’s all a matter of per- spective. [...] The ability to choose what we share is a profound act of self-love and respect. [...] The beauty of intimacy in closed spaces is that it fosters connections that are deep and authentic. [...] It is here, in the quiet moments of connec- tion and reflection that we find the true beauty of our shared humanity.
